CEPER research shows that Serbs expect 5 gold medals
CEPER’s recent market research survey examining interest in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games reveals diverse levels of enthusiasm across twelve European countries. The study reveals that Hungarians are the most optimistic, with 16% being certain their country will win over 10 gold medals. On average, most countries expect 3 golds this year, while Hungary and Serbia lead with 7 and 5. Also, over 1/2 of the Serbian respondents believe that their country will win 1-5 gold medals. Over 1/4 of Montenegrins do not expect their country to win a single gold medal, while only 1.8% of Serbs think that their country will have no golds this year.

The latest CEPER survey underscores significant variations in how different populations plan to engage with the Summer Olympics. North Macedonia emerges as the most enthusiastic country, with 52% of respondents indicating their intention to follow the Games closely. Similarly, high interest is noted in Slovenia and Croatia, where 47% and 45% of the population respectively have expressed plans to watch the Olympic events. On the other hand, Romania and Austria show the least interest in the Games: 52.8% of Romanians and 45.74% of Austrians state they will not be watching the competitions.

A strong sense of national pride is evident as many respondents prefer to watch Olympic events specifically when their national athletes compete. In Serbia, 28% of the respondents plan to follow the Olympics and that percentage goes up to 36% in case that national athletes are performing. Serbia leads this selective viewership trend with these respondents interested exclusively in their national athletes' performances. Close behind, Poland reports 35%, and Czechia shows 31%, reflecting that a significant portion of the audience is primarily interested in their own country’s participants. Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary also exhibit this trend with 30%, 30% and 26%.

Since the Olympic Games are synonymous with winning gold medals, most surveyed countries are uncertain (on average 23%) about how many gold medals their national team might win. The most optimistic is Hungary with 7 gold medals expected. Serbia is on the high second place among the 12 surveyed countries: with the average of 5 gold medals expected, Serbian spectators are more optimistic compared to Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Czechia with 4 and Slovenia, Slovakia and Austria with 3 gold medals expected on average by their citizens. Montenegro expects 2 and North Macedonia 1 gold medal.

On a scale from 0 to over 10, Hungary was the first country where 16% of respondents expected more than 10 gold medals, unlike Montenegro, where as many as 27% of respondents expected their country to win 0 gold medals, followed by North Macedonia with 19%.

With such diverse expectations, the Summer Olympics promise to be a captivating event for all of Europe.
