Today Marks World Obesity Day
World Obesity Day, observed globally on March 4, experts and patient associations are warning that it is time for obesity to stop being a stigma and become a public health priority. Serbia is facing an alarming rise in this condition, highlighting the need for a systematic, professional, and compassionate approach.

Obesity is a serious, chronic, progressive, and relapsing disease associated with more than 200 health complications, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. It is directly linked to at least 13 types of cancer and, after smoking, is the second leading preventable cause of cancer. Its impact on the heart and blood vessels is particularly concerning, as cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among people with obesity.

Experts emphasize that modern therapeutic approaches, combined with lifestyle changes and continuous medical supervision, can significantly contribute to long-term treatment outcomes. In this context, GLP-1 agonist therapies, which help regulate appetite and metabolism, are expected to become available in the domestic market soon.
Pharmaceutical company Galenika announced this week the launch of an advanced therapy for obesity, further expanding treatment options available to patients in Serbia.
